Metadata

See what your file says behind the page.

A PDF or Word document carries more than its text: who wrote it, what software touched it, when it changed, how many times it was revised. Syft lays those fields out plainly, and helps you send a copy without them.

Identity

Author and last-modified-by names, company fields, the account that created the template. Often filled in by the software without anyone deciding to.

Process

Creator and producer applications, document versions, total editing time, revision counts: a work history the page itself never shows.

Time

Created, modified and sometimes last-printed timestamps, precise to the second and to a time zone. Enough to date a draft you presented as new.

Which fields a file actually carries varies by format, software and settings, and part of the point of inspecting is finding out. Image formats can add device and software details of their own.

Syft's Metadata inspector reading a Word document: identity (author, company), dates, software and editing history, with the Deep metadata row and raw view beneath
The Metadata inspector: grouped, plain-language fields.
The same inspector with the raw metadata view expanded: searchable docProps keys and values exactly as the file spells them
The raw view: the same facts, as the file actually records them.

The distinction that matters

Metadata is what's there. Privacy is what it exposes.

Metadata answers 'what exists in this file'. Privacy reads the same fields the way a recipient could and turns them into findings you can act on. Two questions, kept honestly separate.

Syft's Privacy exposure panel reading the same document's metadata as exposure: identity graded moderate, location none found, device and software low, time low, document history low, hidden information none found
The Privacy lens over the same file: the facts, re-read as exposure.

Depth

As deep as the format allows.

Most of what a document records is readable the moment you add it. A few formats keep fields behind heavier inspection tooling, and Syft can run that pass over a single file when you ask for it.

Standard fields

Document properties, application fields, revision counts and timestamps, read as soon as the file is open, wherever the format exposes them.

Deeper inspection

The formats and fields that need real inspection tooling to reach. Run per file, and only when you ask for it.

Find → remove → verify

Seeing it is half the job. Clean is the other half.

When the inspector shows fields you'd rather not send, Clean creates a sanitized copy of the document without them. Your original is never modified, and the copy shows exactly which fields it dropped before you share it.

One lens of five

Metadata is where inspection starts, not where it ends.

The same workspace reads the document's privacy exposure, provenance and structure, runs Syft Detect over its text, and can compare versions, extract contents and export one consolidated report.
